I read out of one of my magazines lastnight and read about nutrition. I read about sugars and artificial sugars. This what exactly what the article said about artificial sweeneters, I am copying it down every letter of it, so here goes:
One way to cut back on sugar without giving up treats is to dupe your sweet tooth with artificial sweeteners. These chemicals are anywhere from 200 to 2,000 times sweeter than sugar, so they pack a lot of sweeteners without the calories.
In theory, these products, such as Sweet 'N Low, Splenda, and Nutrasweet, should help you keep your weight in check. In reality, artificial sweeteners have not been found to help people cut calories and lose weight. In fact, one recent study found the opposite to be true.
In an eight-year study of 1,550 soda drinkers ages 25-64, researchers found that those who drank diet soft drinks were at a greater risk becoming overweight than those who sipped sugary sodas. In fact, for each can of diet soft drink consumed per day, a person's risk of obesity went up 41 percent. While this study may show only that people who drink lots of diet soda are trying(and ultimately failing) to control a weight problem, it also may say something about how the body responds to being tricked. Researchers speculate that offering your body something that tastes like sugar without delivering calories it's expecting may actually sharpen your sweet craving and lead you to eat more later on. In the end, it's wise to use artificial sweeteners much as you do the real deal: in moderation.-Selene Yeager
Myself, I don't, never have, never will drink that shit. In my opinion, you are better off drinking real sugary drinks than artificial drinks. Artificial drinks give me a stinkin' headache anyway, so that is how I know it is bad for me. If you drink artificial drinks, you would gain more weight than you would drinking sugary drinks. I drink 2 cans of fruit punch or lemonade for lunch a day and the rest is water. Water is good for you and most people don't drink enough water. Your pee should be clear or almost yellow, you don't want it to be really orange yellow that it stinks so much which can lead to dehydration and feel more tired. Also, you want to drink a lot water to clean out your system, every day, which can lead from you getting sick all the time.
Here's a list of drinks to stay away from:
Diet sodas
Soda pop (carbonated water)
Hardcore energy drinks
Caffeine
List of drinks is ok with you:
Noncarbonated sugary drinks
Koolaid
Hot chocolate
Eggnog
Milk
Juice
Water(the most important, should drink 8 glasses a day!)
For you Diet Coke drinkers, might as well drink the real stuff(Coca Cola), after reading all this. But don't drink like ten cans a day, you only need one to two cans day. Coca Cola is even bad for you anyway so tough luck. Drink water, if you really care about your health. Tip how to drink water: EXERCISE, cardiovascular fitness with make your heart pump and blood move fast. Your body will be thirsty for water, not carbonated water. Also be really thirsty for juice! Juice is good.
What Dr. James Stevens, R.D. said about real sugar: "How your body uses sugar and what kind it uses depends on whether you're sedetary, active or exercising intensely. Unless you're exercising, there's no need to consume added sugar."

dr, daniel barlow and dr.darreal olsen have put out the word on sweeteners, and as a diabetic i concer with both esteamed doctors
What about sauerkraut?
Egg nog is actually high in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol.
I know. It's ok just to drink during the holidays. I only drink that stuff like once or twice a year. A least it's healthier than that fake sugar.
Well, yea..moderation in all things. I guess it all depends on what ales you.(overweight, high cholesteral....) I don't like the diet stuff either. I do eat alot of sauerkraut though...
I just had some eggnog with my lunch today, I wish I had some sauerkraut too though. Joseph Smith said "in moderation in good things, not in moderation in all things. Good things". I am getting sick of turkey, we are going to have turkey for our ward party tonight. I wish we have ham or something.
So if it's bad, I can have all I want? SWEEEET!
"moderation in all things" has been taught before Joseph Smith. I guess I was just spewing out a basic belief I have of moderation in all things, some things are not good or bad, but moderation is still a good code to live by...don't work too much, don't play too much, don't sleep do much, don't eat too much.....Of course it's not a blanket statement, but I know what it means to me.
Should listen to the prophet. Today's prophets teaches things about the world today. That's why we listen to general conference. Revelation.
Yes, you should. I never said otherwise.
I am not expert, but I think when he said "moderation in all good things" he was clarifying it as it pertains to the word of wisdom for some who misunderstood the meaning. I have also heard it stated, "moderation in all things, except those specifically forbidden by the Lord" I think you are right as it pertains to the word of wisdom..but I believe "moderation in all things" goes beyond just the word of wisdom.
Isn't anyone else going to comment any more on this great post by Daniel...Dad, the religion expert...Karen the diet coke expert. I guess they are too busy.
i haven't been to the biker in ages, but everyting smart tony says seems just right....but i would be carefull if i picked something not expressly forbidden by the church like swallowing nails and then swallowed them in moderation, i might still be in trouble
That's why I said I agree with the interpretation for the word of wisdom...and yes we still have to use our brains.
OK, I am back on the blog scene and I do have an opinion on this subject! I have been driking diet coke for probably 25 years and I am at about the same weight I was back then. Send those research doctors to my house!!! Now I may eat my words in 20 more years if I end up weighing 300 pounds but I think that is highly unlikely. Also has anyone considered the fact that sugar is bad for your teeth? Hmmm??? Now I WILL agree that water is better for you than all of the soda, juice, egg nog, caffeine etc. I would be a fool to argue that but I am sceptical to think that drinking diet coke will make me fat! OH, I ALSO LOVE SAUERKRAUT!!!!!!!
Oh,I also agree that eating nails would be a foolish thing.
The reason I don't drink diet drinks because they give me a headache and if you keep getting headaches, it would cause brain damage. Another thing, I feel like I exercise on bikes, snowshoes, etc. a lot, I need the sugar. Sugar is energy. People who drink diet drinks are too lazy to exercise to use up real sugar like they should. Another thing, if you just drink two cans a day like during lunch, it won't hurt your teeth. I guess you need diet drinks if you are going to be sipping 10 cans of pop a day while they should be drinking water instead.
I just learned from my counselor that they had a group meeting at the counseling center last Friday and they talked about artificial sweeteners. They talked about how diet drinks not only damages your brain, it also damages your kidneys and your liver. It seems to me like Karen cares about her teeth more than her liver, kidneys and brain. That is just freakin' rediculous! Just drink regular sugar and water! That's the key of good health. Stay away from artificial sweeteners. Why not? They taste bad anyways don't they?
Ya, ummm, I'll have it with extra cheese, extra pepperoni, extra canadian bacon, extra olives, extra extra peppers, extra pineapple, extra sausage, and two diet cokes. Sound familiar? Real freakin' rediculous.
OK, let's just do some basic math. A regular soda has 100 calories per 8 oz. Let's say you drink 32 oz. a day (one monster mug refil). That means you would be drinking an extra 146,000 calories a year which is equivalent to 19.5 pounds of new body fat each year. Yes, you can exercise to burn off those calories. You will need to burn 7,500 calories to burn up 1 pound of that fat you just gained by sucking down a sugar drink (that doesn't count the calories you ate) for me, I would need to walk an extra 2 hours on the treadmil each day just to burn off my "drink" for the day. I exercise everyday anyway but why add 2 extra hours just to enjoy a sugar soda? I have heard many rumors that artifical sweetners are damaging to your brain etc. but in order to eat that much artifical sweetner (that they gave the rats in the study) you would have to drink it by the bucketfuls (not just a tiny ammount added into your coke) Again, I will not argue that drinking SODA is bad...all soda is worse for you than water but I still stand by my theory that diet drinks are better for you than a sugared one. Love your diet coke drinking sister
Wow, this is really heating up! I guess I kind of agree with both of you, but kind of disagree with both of you..I don't want to go into any detail, but I will say that I use to drink at least one huge mug of dew a day and couldn't gain any weight, since I broke my arm and have not been as active I have been gaining some weight(I don't drink as much pop now, but I am older too). Yes, it is worth it to me to be able to eat and drink(with some moderation) what I want. I don't like to excersize that much, in the summer when I am more active I don't have to, but since I don't like to snowshoe or ski, I am having to find a way to burn some extra calories to take the weight off I have gained since my arm went to shit. I am not sure if this comment means anything..it's just some more observations...I am not concerned as much about my weight as I am about being strong and healthy to be able to enjoy life with my family and be the best I can be at what I do...if I cut out the dew, it cuts out some of that enjoyment I get..drink a dew and ride hard!
Oh, and I do agree that the diet drinks can't be as bad as Dan says, but I have nothing to back it up.
I guess in summary, I think that getting too caught up in dieting sucks, drinking diet stuff is gross so I don't..for no other reason, I like dew, pizza, saurkraut, licorice, candy..I try to brush my teeth, but I can't live in fear of getting a cavity, or in fear of getting fat...or in fear of breaking more bones.. Man, can I just shut up! nobody is going to understand this.
I like cow too. One time I ate a pound of ground up cow on a burger as big as my face!
That's why you should exercise, that's the point, burn off calories and making your body healthier and stronger. Teaching your body getting stronger will make your brain smarter and thinking more clearly. Make muscle on your body and heart stronger to get the blood moving more reasonably to make you look and feel better. ANYBODY? Is anybody with me on exercising is good for you? Not just to sit there and be lazy watching tv drinking diet coke. You can keep on drinking your diet Coke but I am going to drink the real stuff and burn it off and get stronger! Do what you want.
Yes Daniel, I think we are with you on that..it sounds like Karen and I both excersize. I have always excersized regularly.
What I meant about not excersizing in the summer, is not doing specific cardio indoors, like on the bike rollers or whatever because I get enough cardio running outside, or riding my bike...I still lift all the time, summer, winter, whatever. I do cardio all the time too, but in the winter I do it indoors.
Daniel, I think you try to make stuff too black and white. I should learn to make my comments more clear I guess..or not comment. It's good to have an opinion, but don't assume too much in others just because we are not as open about our "excersize" and diet as you are eh. I really doubt that Karen is "lazy"..I don't think I am lazy either. Thanks for the warning and opinion on the artificial sweeteners. There are all kinds of variables in peoples lives and all kinds of ways to live them.
Yes Daniel we all agree that exercise is important. (Thanks for standing up for me Tony) Rob and I exercise every night. I guess it all comes down to eat, drink and be merry all in moderation! :) I agree with Tony and Dan, what is important is staying healthy so we can live long lives and be able to participate in activities we enjoy wether it be snowshoe, motercycles or beaches! It has been an interesting debate. Who knows what is best? I guess we just all do what is best for each of us...so far I think all three of us are happy, healthy and not overweight...so we must be doing soemthing right!
