24 hours of pain and glory....
This has got to be the hardest sport event in the world, it looks even harder than the Tour de France. The 24 hour solo race. I just got this video in the mail yesterday and watched it with dad lastnight and it made me appreciate that I am not one of those racers. They race a solid 24 hours(has lights at night), each lap has 1,000 feet of climbing and they do 34 laps. That is a hell 34,000 feet of climbing in 24 hours! That is higher than Mt. Everest(Mt. Everest is 29,000 feet)! The video is about a quest of one racer going for his 7th World Champion title in 24 Solo Race. His name is Chris Eatough. He is the man! He trains 6 days a week, 60 miles a day on a road bike for 50 weeks. I only ride 2 climbs a week and one 60 mile road ride a week! This guy rides way more than I do! Anyways, when I watched these racers on the video, I did not see one smile, it did not look like they were having fun. I mean, what's the point? Riding 24 hours and killing yourself? I don't know, sounds like they sure do get a lot of exercise, but it is way too much exercise and your body could shut down. That's what happened to one of the racers, Craig Gordon, who finished 3rd. His liver expanded 20 times and his legs completely shut down, he had to go to the hospital afterwards, for a while. And there's no smiling after the race, they just cry. Doesn't sound like fun to me. The most I will ride is probably 6 hours and that is it. I rode 5 and a half hours once and boy I was one tired puppy. Anyways, the video was awesome, good music, less talk, and it showed a lot more riding than "Off Road to Athens". If you ever want to see one person suffer the hell itself, don't be shy to ask to borrow my video.

i can't think of any one activity that you go a straight 24 hours, basket ball is only 60 minutes straight. football only 2 and a half hrs straight...running is over in minutes, motorcross never lasts...nothing
What about baja? 1,000 miles through the desert on a motorbike, all night, all day, till you finish.. or don't...people die at baja.
24 hours on the hammers..24 hours straight, rock crawl, winching, wrenching.. I can name more if you want...
It all depends on the intensity. Nobody could ever survive a 24 hour enduro race on a dirt bike, that's why they only last 3 hours, and most people never finish. Imagine, pushing a 250 pound dirt bike up a hill, through mud, over rocks for very long! A motocross only lasts 30 minutes, but it is intense!
Just to give you an idea, the first ever atv rider to complete the baja 1,000 solo was awake for 46 hours solid, and was in the saddle for 39 hours.
It seems to me like in the baja, they don't do any pedaling. Imagine PEDALING your bike for 24 hours. I could probably ride on a dirt bike longer than ride a mountain bike. That is pretty cool though, riding a motor cycle for 1,000 miles. But it seems to me like that the PEDALING on a mountain bike for 24 hours is a lot harder than riding a motor bike for a long time.
Actually Daniel, I have done both, not for 24 hours, but I know how much it takes to do both. Yes, it is a little different, but it is VERY hard to ride a dirt bike hard for any amount of time. I use to ride my mountain bike all the time on extended, 4 or 5 hour rides. I have a hard time riding my motorbike HARD for just 1 or 2 hours at a time. Obviously, like I said, it depends on the intensity, and your conditioning, but if you can try to imagine that they have to drill and wire the bolts on to the bikes and atv's so they don't rattle off during the race, you will get some idea of the torture your body would go through. The bikes they use for baja are much different than my bike. The power is smoother, the suspension cushier. Motocross bikes are a handfull, especially when you grab a big piece of throttle and shoot yourself over bumps, woops etc. shifting your weight, holding on to the bars, moving the bike with your legs and midsection.... Try it sometime and see how long you last...Motocross racers are totally spent after a half hour race, and yes, they are in excellent condition. I was spent after an hour riding my motorbike up prov, TOTALLY SPENT LIKE NEVER BEFORE! Baja racers have to pace themselves for the whole 1,000 miles. Your 24 hour riders have to pace themselves for the 24 hours. Eduro motorbike racers have to pace themselves for the 3 hours...my point is there are other sports where you go straight for 24 hours or more. Why are ya'll knocking something you know nothing about?
I am not trying to take anything away from the sport of pedal biking, and I think your video looks neat, but in each sport atheltes are pushing their bodies to their physical breaking point to win, in that respect..it is no different. That's all I am saying.
Another point..do you think pedaling is the only motion to use muscles? How long can you last on a mogul field skiing? You are not PEDALING...You stand on a motorbike 90% of the time off road..
Think about it...
i,ve thought about it and you are right, tony
Besides the fact that at some points you are traveling 130 miles per hour on your dirt bike in the baja trying to keep it in control, then 5 mph working your way over stumps, rocks whatever..who is to say what is "harder"? You put spandex boy on a dirt bike in the baja and he would get his butt handed to him on a plate with a side of poo on you...put Johny Campbell or Ricky Carmichael on a pedal bumper and they would lose, but Ricky Carmichael on the motocross track can outlast anyone because of his rigorous training, Johny Campbell is the best there is at the baja right now. They train different for different things, but they are all extraordinary atheletes. The dude riding 24 hours on his road bike wouldn't last in the baja, it doesn't mean he is not in good shape..ok I think I have covered my point
Okay. Let's see you pedal on a mountain bike at 90% heart rate for a hour and a half then.
been there, done that.
I think you missed my point.
Or..maybe you just don't agree...that's fine.
Let's see you do it right now, that is what I mean, not when you were in shape and riding in New Mexico. I bet you could ride a lot longer on a motor bike when you were in better shape. Oh yeah, let's see you climb the Ephraim Canyon Road 7 times without stopping. That is what the 24 hours of mountain bike racing is like, it's just all climbing and your legs and whole body just hurts and your heart just doesn't want to beat anymore. Not just sitting on your ass and twist your grip all day and heart rate is like 80 beats per minute instead of 170-180 beats per minute like on a mountain bike. Maybe you just forgot what mountain biking is like because it seems like you haven't ridden a mountain bike in 15 years. I remember when you went up the Skyline Trail in Ogden with me and Mike, imagine doing THAT seven times without stopping. You and Mike just dropped out after about an hour I remember.
You can think whatever you want dude.
Since when is the pedal bike the almighty gauge to whose in shape or not?
...did I ever say I could ride this 24 hr race?
Did I ever compare myself to any these atheletes?
Watch the video on my blog of bikers "sitting on their ass at 80 beats per minute and twisting the grip". This is what I mean by "riding hard". You are right, I am probably not as in good of cardio shape right now as when I was 21, but I am stronger, bigger, more able to muscle a big bike around...I don't want to weigh 145 again, I want as much muscle mass as I can get to ride my bike. How might Terrel Owens do in a mtn. bike race? How might Lance Armstrong do in a football game..both great atheletes, right?
I would like to check out your video sometime, maybe when we come down after Thanksgiving we could watch it.
i acutually showed this film in karma's primary classs when she was up with becky in clinton...the boys (seven and eight years old), and there were no girls in the class were awestruck by it and wondered why all their lesson weren't this good...the topic of the class was courage, strenghth, perserverance, endure to the end
oh, and tony the rider's kidney was 20 times it's original size and his legs were startin g to shutdown{Gordon was his name}i agree wtih both mysons but you will have to see this vidio, like i say i was so impressed with the emotion of it i had to make it an example of courage....really as much as any war vetern...see the movie, please
and this 24 hour race was intense, all 24 hours
I believe you, I never said it wasn't. Daniel is the one saying that other sports are NOT intense simply because you don't PEDAL. I happen to know for a FACT that he is SO WRONG!! He is still entitled to his opinion however misguided and narrow minded it may be. Whatever argument you to support that opinion will not hold water.
THE END.
Ok, I will say that in other sports like motor biking is hard because of moving and lifting a lot. All sports are hard. I will have to say. It is good that there are all kinds of sports for everyone to have courage for and work real hard on. To do what they love and enjoy. And some goals on the sport they can work toward to.
Come on boys everyone knows that running is the hardest and you must be in the best shape.
He he
LOL
I did a google search on "running", and although there are running events that last 24 hours and beyond, none of them require pedaling...sorry Shelly.
About those running events, they run on the Great Western Trail along the Wasatch Front and they go 100 miles! Now that is harder than cycling and motocross. By the way, I talked to Durke Gordon, he did a 12 hour bike race in September and he rides motor bikes all the time too, more than Tony. I asked him what is harder, the mountain bike race or a motor bike endurance event. He said, definitely the mountain bike race because you are pumping your heart and moving your body all the time the same time. So, that is advice from Durke Gordon. You don't have to believe him if you don't want to but he is the first guy in Sanpete that has ever done a 12 hour race. Rich Murdock did a 10 hour race before but his race is a lot harder(Leadville 100) with all the steep hills and everything. Durke said Leadville 100 is a lot harder than Logan to Jackson Hole race(Lotoja). The Endurance 100 in Park City is way harder than both of them and Chris Eutough won that one.
I know that different EVENTS are harder/easier etc. DUH!
a 1,000 mile dirt bike race is harder than riding a 10 mile mountain bike race etc. etc. etc. etc. It's not to say that dirt biking is harder! a 1,000 mile pedal bike race is not even possible, that's why you have to go 1,000 miles of some of the worse imaginable terrain to have a HARD dirt bike race. If the terrain is REALLY bad, like Erzberg, you race for less distance. Running is harder to go any distance than pedal biking(less mechanical advantage) so the races are shorter.. but is a one hour running race harder than a 24 hour mountain bike race?, I don't think so. Anytime you push your body till it can't be pushed anymore you are still getting your body to the same spot, the journey is just different. Can't you see my point? Nobody even did the baja 1,000 solo on an atv till a couple years ago.
Has Durke ever done a hard enduro RACE on a dirt bike? Has he ever done the baja 1,000 SOLO...I don't believe him, you won't convince me. There are harder races and easier races in each sport. I see old lady's riding pedal bikes around town...I see old lady's walking and running....so I guess it's easier than dirt biking...no, it probably does depend a little on the event, right?
I am POSITIVE that the 24 hour mountain bike race is ONE of the hardest sporting events..you can't say it is THE hardest. And I was only telling dad that there ARE other sporting events that go 24 hours and beyond and they DO compare in difficulty to the 24 hour bike race..
By the way the distance record on 24 hour running is like 150 miles or something... The baja 1,000 must be completed within 36 hours to place.
IF Durke was COMPETITIVE at both dirt biking and mountain biking then I might put some stock into what he says, but I doubt he would say at that point that one is simply harder than the other. Anyone can go out and ride a dirt bike or a mountain bike, but it's a whole different ball game to be COMPETITIVE.
Next time you see Shelly ask her how my heart rate and breathing was riding my dirt bike up prov...I was just trying to get up the damn trail, imagine trying to be the first one up of a group of the best riders. Each sport takes a little different combination of strength and cardio, so to be good in one, doesn't mean you can compete in the other...but when you are racing, you are racing and you do whatever your body can do to be the first one across the line.
Just curious, how many people have finished the 24 hr bike race?
How many have finished the 100 mile run you are talking about?
Not very many. There's not very many that would do the race, only the ones that are in really good shape and have been doing it for years. In the Endurance 100 in Park City, there were only a few that did the race. Like 50 or so. Nobody really wants to do it.
I reached to 30 comments! In your face everybody! That is definitely a new record.
Travis Good does the Baja every year and finishes and does very good. He did good last year, that's what I heard. He does a lot motor bike races and does good in them. Pretty sweet. That would be hard to ride a motor bike for 48 hours. Also ride a mountain bike for 24 hours. They are both hard for a professional cyclist and motor cyclist.
That's cool.
Does he do the baja 250, 300, 500, 1,000?
Congrats on the 31 comments...32!
Did you get a chance to check out the Erzberg videos on our blog? I wish I could ride like that.
I don't know what he does, why don't you look at the results and see if you can see his name on any of them. I saw the video, looks hard.

I can't believe people do it solo!
Wow! That is good! Did you know Travis and Jeff Good by any chance? I think I went into one of Leslie Good's son's house in Springville many years ago back in the nineties and I saw all those motor cycle trophies all around the fireplace mantle. There were like 50 of them. Travis runs a landscape and lawncare company here in Ephraim called "Good's Lawncare".
I knew who he was, but that's about it.
38 comments now! Let's try to get to 40! Maybe 50. Let's keep talking about bikes!
I found more parts of Adam Riemann's training videos..

Training for Erzberg part 2
Training for Erzberg part 3

Are you going to let Becky beat you with her 65 friggin comments?
Why don't you allow annonymous comments etc.? Brayden sometimes wants to comment, but he can't without the option to put your name and url in.
you might beat Becky and not even know it!
Did you know that Becky has 66 comments?

How many did Becky end up with?
This blog sucks.
Holy crap, Bark ended up with 85 comments on one post! you'll never beat that.
Or,
MAYBE,
JUST
MAYBE!!
you will.
No way, 85!!
I don't think I have that many meaningless comments in me.
You know how you make riding a dirt biking more physically demanding? Go on a harder trail! Push your limits.., increase intensity, speed, duration...your idea of "riding" a dirt bike is pretty narrow. A good racer cross trains to be able to last a full race, but most of the training is in the saddle, of a dirt bike!

"The National Sport Health Institute in Englewood, California tested several professional motocross racers in the early 1980s as part of a comparative study of the cardio-vascular fitness of athletes from various disciplines. Athletes from track, American football and soccer were tested, among others. The cardiac stress and strength test results compiled there revealed that the motocross subjects had as high of a fitness level as than any other discipline tested."
"There have been studies showing MX has been considered the second most physically demamding sport, second to soccer.
Now granted, that is at a high level, for a long period of time, but as with anything, if you do it slower, it's not as athletic."
"I'm a personal trainer and thought when i picked up singletrack riding 2 years ago i could just get up and go......now when i can't take my bike out i train for it in the gym. I thought i was in good enough shape for it and it whooped me, still does too! I'll tell you what that teacher has no clue- i'd rather take my clients out on the trails than keep them in the gym!"

"I cross train constantly! To stay in shape for off road riding this is what i do: Monday through Friday I ride a road bike (18 speed) at least an 1hr a day, 3 days a week I work out at the gym and this is just so I can go off roading at a good pace.
On another note every year I do a MS ride from Huntington Beach to Oceanside, then inland about 30 miles and then to Mission Bay in San Diego it is about 150 miles. When I'm hammering an off road trail for a couple of hours, I'm just as exhausted as I am when I get done with the MS ride!
Again it all depends on how much effort you put into riding. Some like cruising, but those of us that hammer are definitely getting a good all around workout!"

"people say to me all the time, "well the bike does all the work, all you do is sit there" You have no idea how mad i get when i hear that. The ignorance and close-mindedness of some people is completely mind boggling to me. I usually come back with this comment, "You try wrestling around a 220# machine at a high rate of speed and then tell me how easy it is"

READ THIS
"Most of those that are around the industry and who closely follow the sport of motocross will tell you that motocross athletes are some of the fittest athletes in the world. Someone who would know is Dr. Jeff Spencer, who has trained athletes like Lance Armstrong and Chad Reed. When asked to compare the fitness level of Lance Armstrong to a top motocross racer, Dr. Spencer said, “Motocross by far requires the highest level of combined fitness of any sport on the face of the earth, bar none.” He continued, “I’ve spent 5 tours (Tour de France) with Lance Armstrong and Lance is no slouch. But Lances’ overall general fitness doesn’t even compare to the overall fitness of a motocross racer.”"

75 comments won't beat bark.
I can't believe bark has 100 comments on one post!!
I geuss when you only have like 5 posts and you don't ever do new posts and you have a putz making lame comments for no other reason than to see how many comments....well you get the point.
HEY!
I resemble that!
Did you see the comment I got on my blog from a personal trailer who replaces two workouts with a dirt bike ride?
...I think that definitely says something!
HE
COULD!
GO!!!

DAMN, only 86 comments.
100 is a lofty mark indeed!
I wonder what kind of squash grandma will have for Thanksgiving??
Damnit Tony, Becky needs the record! Not Daniel, knock this shit off!
A personal trainer that actually replaces TWO full workouts with ONE dirt bike ride!!
Yea, that definitely says a lot!!
Hi Shelly.
Did you get your comment feed working?
Shelly, Shelly, Shelly..Are you reading all the comments??
I had to come back and get some of my qoutes that I left before. There's actually a girl here that doesn't believe that motocross is a physically demanding sport!! LOL.
How many comments did Beck end up with on one post?
